Looks like Nielsen has officially crowned the smartphone as the mobile device of the majority as smartphone market share rose from 49 to 56 percent in 2012. This means that smartphone use has finally overshadowed traditional mobile phones; we have officially entered the future!

We Are All Distracted

According to a new study published in the online journal Injury Prevention, close to 29.8% of people crossing a street were distracted by their mobile device while doing so. Not only is this dangerous, if you are a busy person living in an urban area it is most likely inevitable.

Are Cellphones Responsible For Lowering Crime?

According to a new paper from the University of Pennsylvania the proliferation of cellphone use in the 1990's may be directly linked to the nearly one-third drop in the annual crime rate that occurred in that same period.

Debate: How Do We Protect Children on Smartphones?

There is currently a debate brewing as to whether or not cell phone apps should automatically allow data sharing and inter connectivity when children can so easily access their product and share data without parental consent.

"The software industry is bracing for new regulations that it says will stifle creativity and saddle small businesses with legal and technical costs to ensure their cellphone apps don’t run afoul of the rules. The changes, which the FTC is expected to approve this week, would update a 14-year-old law prohibiting the collection of personal information from preteens. It raises these questions: What is the value of a child’s privacy on the Internet, and who should pay for it?" - via WSG.

Good News: Cell Phones Still Aren't Causing Cancer

According to BGR a Swedish study showed no correlation between mobile phone use and the development of gliomas, a broad range of tumors that develop either in the brain or spinal chord.

Among 20 to 39-year-old women, there is a slight increase of glioma cases. But among men, the number of cases has been declining since late 1980s. “Epidemiology” has an impact factor of 5.566 and it ranks as the No.4 journal in the category of “Public, Environmental and Occupational Health.” This effectively trumps all published research papers that have hinted at a link between brain cancer and mobile phone usage." - from BGR

Interesting: 52% of Shoppers Used Cell Phones to Compare Prices

Just a nice daily tid-bit of information; it was reported by the Pew Research Center that 52% of customers used their cell phones to aid in holiday shopping in 2011, a trend that is likely to continue this year.

"More than half (52%) of adult cell phone owners used their cell phones while they were in a store during the 2011 holiday season to seek help with purchasing decisions.

During a 30 day period before and after Christmas 2011, 38% of cell owners called a friend for advice about a purchase they were considering; 24% looked up online reviews of a product; and, 25% checked prices to see if they could do better elsewhere." - via Pew
