iPhone Users Have the Highest Cell Phone Bills

According to this article over at Complex Tech, iPhone users find themselves locked into $100+ monthly plans far more often than Android users.

http://www.complex.com/tech/2013/01/survey-iphone-users-have-the-highest-cell-phone-bills

This trend becomes much more easy to understand when you take into account the fact that iPhones are typically not supported by "pay as you go" or lower-tiered pricing plans. Does this mean that Android phones are only for poor people? Not really. It really just means that people who are not adverse to the expense of a new iPhone typically aren't adverse to the notion of a more expensive data plan.

People Who Call & Drive May Just Be Bad Drivers

According to a survey conducted by AAA, data shows that those individuals who use their cell phones while driving may also have several other bad driving habits. In essence, those who use phones while driving may just be bad drivers.

http://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1081959_aaa-study-drivers-who-use-cell-phones-probably-have-other-bad-habits

This might not be such a revelation for some readers, however since some seem to think that mobile phones have caused a dramatic shift in poor driving decisions this survey shows that those who were already bad drivers may be the ones who drive poorly while talking on a phone. Altogether it is not necessarily the device that causes the horrific driving; more like the horrific drivers themselves.

How Cell Phones Will Help Prevent The Next Plague

Did you always think your mobile device would never amount to anything but a giant time-suck? How many times has someone told you to "stop looking at that thing!"? As it turns out, phones can be used to actually make the world a better place.

Who would've known?

http://www.pddnet.com/news/2013/01/onr-program-uses-cell-phones-fight-epidemics

This article details an initiative by the Office of Naval Research to use mobile phones in biological and natural disaster areas in order toe map and contain the spread of disease, illness, earthquakes, and any other natural phenomenon that can be easily mapped. The system uses a combination of text messages, pictures, vocal recordings, and any other data that can be pieced together to form a more thorough depiction of an outbreak. This system could save thousands of lives, and it runs off of your #1 time-suck.

Sony, The Next Apple?

It seems that the head honchos over at Sony have decided to ramp things up a notch in their smartphone business.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/sony/9809157/Sony-focuses-on-high-end-smartphones-to-take-on-iPhone.html

This article via The Telegraph details Sony's plans to focus only on "high-end mobile devices." Sound familiar? Basically the company wants to see the same profit margins as Apple gained with their iPhone, offering only one price range of phone means that consumers can only choose the premium model at any time (sans storage options). This strategy has shown to be extremely lucrative with Apple, however Sony has already been manufacturing "premium" smartphones for several years now. It really doesn't make too much sense that simply eliminating your more consumer-friendly models would change your economics.

Who knows, maybe Sony will be the next Apple!

The iPhone Will Never Be Cheap

Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller went on record yesterday to state that a cheap version of its flagship iPhone will "never be the future of Apple's products." This announcement comes as somewhat of a surprise to many market analysts as they were expecting Apple to introduce a cheaper version of the iPhone aimed at saturating the low-end smartphone dominant developing markets such as China.

This snippet from Talking Points Memo details Schiller's comments and goes on to state that some analysts still believe that a cheaper, not necessarily bargain-bin, iPhone may still be on the way.

A Challenger Appears: Ubuntu Smartphones Incoming

Some of our loyal customers may not be too keen as to what Ubuntu is; simply put it is a stable consumer operating system based on Linux. A few entrepreneurs now wish to bring this computing platform into the realm of smartphones in order to compete with the likes of Google's Android OS and Apple's iOS. Their biggest target: emerging markets where smartphone sales have yet to take off. In many of these places (China, Africa) Ubuntu is already a relatively popular computing platform so consumers may be more inclined to stick within the Ubuntu ecosystem when they purchase a smartphone.

This article from the MIT Technology Review details just how Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth intends to roll out his OS to the smartphone platform.

Which Would You Choose: Running Water Or Your Smartphone?

In a very interesting article over at The Daily Beast author Megan McArdle describes how some rural farmers in Asia and Africa have chosen the connection provided by modern social media and cellular technology over providing their abodes with running water and indoor plumbing.

Be Careful Out There: Nevada Cracks Down On Driving While Using Cell Phones

Driving while talking on a cell phone; we have all done it at one point in time, but we know it is dangerous. Some states have even created laws that make driving while on your phone a ticketable offense.

Nevada is one of these states; 2012 was their first full year with the ban in effect, giving out almost 12,000 tickets over the course of the year

Just a friendly reminder to be careful out there dear customers, we know it is not always convenient to put your cell phone down while driving but facing a ticket or getting into a wreck is a much worse outcome than missing your friend's text message.
